General practice
The weekly work of a Hong Kong practice.
Personal injury, private company documents, civil claims, and family matters. Makebell drafts them from the firm’s own precedents, so the first version is ready for review rather than started from a blank page. The medical reports, client papers, and other documents stay on the firm’s machines.

The papers
- Medical reports
- Employees’ compensation claim
- Statement of damages
- Witness statement
- Shareholders’ agreement
- Share purchase agreement
- Board minutes
- Written resolutions
- Letter before action
- Statement of claim
- Divorce petition
- Form E
On this week’s files.
01
Personal injury and employees’ compensation
Makebell reads the medical reports, wage records, sick leave certificates and receipts.
It drafts the chronology, the statement of damages, the statement of claim (where applicable), and a note of what is still missing for both the employees’ compensation claim and the common law claim. The first draft is ready for the lawyer to check. Any figure that is not supported by the papers is left out. The insurer’s offer is shown next to how the firm has settled similar injuries.
02
Shareholders’ agreement and private share sale
Review or draft the shareholders’ agreement, share purchase agreement and resolutions from the firm’s own forms.
For a private company the relevant issues are tenancy, licences, employees, tax and disputes. The draft follows the last agreement the firm signed on a comparable matter, so the markup is smaller.
03
Board minutes and written resolutions
Draft the board minutes, or the written resolutions of the directors or shareholders, from the firm’s own form.
Allotments, transfers, changes of director and bank mandates. The names and numbers come from the current matter. A decision that was not made is not written in. The minutes are ready in the firm’s usual wording.
04
Debt recovery and other civil claims
From the contract and the invoices, draft the letter before action and the statement of claim.
The same process works for rent, a contract claim or a building dispute. The names, dates and amounts come from the file. A case the papers do not support is not pleaded. The statement of claim is drafted in the firm’s form, ready for review.
05
Divorce petition and ancillary relief
Draft the petition and the narrative for ancillary relief from the papers the client provided.
Form E is checked against the bank statements, property records and income documents. An asset that is not in those papers is not added. The court document stays in the firm’s form, so the lawyer reviews rather than rewrites.
On this work, the same rules.
Private and Local
It can run inside the firm, with no connection out. We never see the files, and a model provider never does. There is no outside copy to keep or to train on.
Only who needs it
Access is limited by person, by matter, and by practice. The admin sets each role. Every action is logged, and can be traced.
Your way of working
It follows your past matters, your wording, and your playbook. A review looks for what your team already treats as important.
Edits you can see
The change is made in the file you already have. Layout and numbering stay. You get track changes, and each answer points to its source.
Ready on day one
Jurisdiction-specific material is already there, from legislation, government, and regulators. So are skills for this kind of work.

Questions
- Can anyone outside the firm see a medical report, or a client’s financial papers?
- No. The system runs on the firm’s machines. Makebell cannot see the files. A model provider cannot see them. There is nothing to store, and nothing to train on.
- Our precedents are Word files. Is that enough?
- Yes. Put in the precedents, the past matters and the playbook. The draft follows those. It does not start from a generic form.
- What if it invents a figure, or a case?
- A sum or a case that is not in the papers on the matter is left out. Each answer links to the passage it came from. The lawyer still decides what is filed, and what is sent to the client.
- Injury files and divorce files sit in the same office. Who can open which?
- Only the people the firm allows. Files are separated by person and by matter. The administrator sets that. Every action is written to the audit log.
- Does the letter to the client have to be in English?
- No. The court document can stay in the firm’s English form. The explanation to the client can be drafted in Chinese, from the same papers.
- What if we do not have the hardware?
- What you need depends on the size of the team and on how the system will be used. Talk to us. We will assess that and recommend what to buy, or what to lease.
